but when they end up ensnared in the trap of an illegal organ trafficking
organisation. "Harvest " Chapter One - The Plan It was a stupid damn plan. Duo was tutting to himself as his fingers drummed on the control console of his own ship, his body hunched over and his head bowed as he waited for the inevitable hailing. He was close enough for their sensors to pick him up, Duo knew that, but they hadn't and that caused him an anxiety he did not like. Getting to his feet, Duo looked out at the infinity of space and shook his head. "Fuck it... never is easy with him, huh?" He couldn't see the old Alliance cruiser. It was one of the large old fashioned mobile suit carriers and it had appeared on his sensors yet was still not visible through the glass. He supposed in the vastness of space, it was a spec but still... the approach felt like it was taking too long and Duo felt like he was locked in some kind of stasis as he waited for the whole damn game to start. Duo wasn't meant to be part of this plan. He'd done his part for peace and he was not getting involved in any Prev shit, no sir. He was meant to be living a peaceful life as a spacer and junker between L2 and Hawaii, earning what he could and giving back what he could and actually living. He'd not wanted missions or reports and a licensed gun and a badge. Yet, of course, a guy with dark hair and the bluest damn eyes had appeared and pointed a gun at his face and while Duo had responded with a gun in his face, he'd ended up somehow getting involved in Prev shit through no fault of his own. Always had to be Yuy. Guy was going to be the death of him one day. Duo was sure. Sighing, he decided to check his precious cargo one more time before the inevitable hailing and so with a slight kick of his legs due to the grav, Duo made his way to small cargo hold his baby had. As his ship was his baby. It was unoriginal but it was the Deathscythe and Duo had put his heart and soul into her - repairing her, painting her and generally spending an unhealthy amount of time on her. Howard had commented about how Duo should just marry it. Duo had thrown a dirty rag in the direction of the old man and chuckled childishly when it hit him in the face. He may've had an obsession with the upgrade and repair of his ship but it wasn't an unhealthy relationship even if he did talk to the machine at regular intervals. Space was a lonely place and Duo had always had a fondness for tech. As even in an abstract way, the ship lived and so Duo could talk to it. At least he rarely had passengers so no one else ever knew. On reaching the cargo hold, Duo held onto the doorway and paused, his eyes drawn to the centre of the metal compartment. On this trip, Duo had once piece of cargo and it was in the middle of the hold, straps holding the thin metal container to the floor. It was something Duo didn't usually transport and with a push, he approached, floating a little before landing and taking heavy footed steps that seemed to rattle around the small space. He'd spent a lot of time around the cargo during the journey from L2 to the random co-ordinates he'd been give near the remains of some of the war-ravaged L5 colonies as he'd been unable to just leave it be. It haunted him when he sat in the pilot's chair, when he was in his cot and even when he tried to forget about its contents, Duo remembered. Hell, did he remember as it was hard to forget about. It was hard to forget Heero Yuy's body was in his cargo hold. Close to the metal coffin like container, Duo could see the glass panel that was above Heero's face and he could see his peaceful seeming expression. Unlike his often cool and serious expression, through the frosted glass Heero looked at peace. He looked asleep and he looked so much younger... beautiful even. Duo gave a small crooked smile at the stupidity of his thoughts. Heero wasn't beautiful. He was strong. Stubborn. Powerful... a million things that Duo could think of but he wasn't really beautiful. But trapped in the metal cryo chamber, he did appear beautiful, crazy as it seemed. "Hope you're dreaming okay, sleeping beauty," Duo said, his hands touching the glass panel and he bowed his head slightly, his bangs over his eyes. He supposed he just had to be grateful. Despite the coffin like appearance of the cryo chamber, Heero was very much alive inside the tube, his body in a state of suspended animation. And it was meant to be a brief thing. Duo cocked his head and he could see a small amount of Heero's toned body through the panel. In the cryo chamber, he was dressed simply in a white t-shirt and black shorts and for some reason it made Duo smile. It reminded him of Heero's war time attire. It seemed funny. But it wasn't funny for so many reasons. As Duo was delivering Heero to a very illegal company who were involved in organ harvesting and the buying and selling of body parts. Duo was going to pretend he was a businessman who committed the worst kind of crimes and he was going to negotiate the sale of Heero's body for the purpose of him being taken to pieces and sold on. It was a horrible idea and it made Duo's stomach sick but despite the façade and the artifice, it was only their "in" and Duo had to go along with it and act the part. Initially, Duo was to board alone until he had some faith and "guarantees" and when they were given, he would bring his bargaining chip for inspection. After Duo had brought Heero on board and started to negotiate, he was going to subtly start the "unfreezing" process by flicking a switch on the chamber and by the time Duo had managed to be his usual friendly charming self, Heero will have been able to get out of his prison and start to compile the evidence to shut down the operation. Between an unfrozen Heero and a sleazy businessman Duo with a hidden recording device underneath his skin, the two of them were going to be able to take down the operation, no sweat and discover how far the terrible organisation extended. It was all going to be easy. Or that's how Heero had pitched it. "Don't you need to be gently woken from cryo?" Duo had asked. They'd both been sat around the small wooden table in Duo's wooden house in Hawaii when he'd asked the question and Heero had only shrugged and took a long swig of the pineapple juice Duo had poured to avoid the question. "It's fine," Heero had answered stoically. "Ahh, right, I get it," Duo had begun sarcastically, "for a mere mortal the shit would be dangerous but not the great Heero Yuy... am I right?" Heero had nodded, the smallest smirk on his face and Duo had been tempted to smack that smirk off the assholes face but instead of that... yeah, he might've ended up somehow kissing the idiot. He didn't regret it either as shit, no matter how far they seemed to get from one another, they always came back and it was always easy and good. It was like Heero was a habit he couldn't break and so when Heero had asked for his help... well, Duo was powerless to say no. He was so damn screwed. Both literally and figuratively. So damn screwed that it led to him hovering over his frozen body, stored inside a cryo chamber as they prepared to complete some dumbass plan for an organisation Duo didn't believe in. "I'm not paid enough for this shit," he griped to the face behind the frosted glass. Duo was very aware that Heero couldn't hear him - nor could he hear anything in the chamber he was enshrouded in - but still he could almost imagine the smirk on Heero's face as he complained, the smug self-satisfied look that suggested it didn't matter how much Duo was paid. As Heero knew the truth - Duo didn't just do it for Heero. He did it to feel useful once again. To feel a little like the teenage war hero, even if it was for an all too brief moment. Maybe he missed the razor blades edge, the closeness of danger and the potential for death. Maybe he was crazy. Duo never claimed to be entirely normal or sane - he'd never truly become a civilian and engaged in more than a few activities that were not entirely legal yet still he was annoyed how easily he let himself be dragged back into the fray. The fight he was not meant to be a part of. He was about to check Heero's vitals - a task that was not necessary as the chamber ensured that Heero's vitals were kept at the correct levels - when a loud bleep startled him and brought him out of his reverie. "Incoming transmission. Incoming transmission. Incoming transmission." Duo smirked after he regained his composure, a hand running through his hair as he let his body get over the brief shock. He was glad he was alone aboard Deathscythe as it was a move that Duo would deserve teasing for and once he was back to his usual confident self, he straightened up and let his hand touch the cool panel of the glass covering Heero's face. "Gotta go, babe. Time to play nice for the deal, huh?" And though Duo knew logically Heero couldn't move nor respond nor even hear him, he thought he saw a slight move of his jaw as he pushed away from the chamber, preparing to begin a mission that would be over in a scant few hours. Or that's what Duo hoped. |
